The global printed circuit board (PCB) market shrank by 4.8% in 2008 from $48.9 billion in the previous year, ending its five years of continuous growth, according to the VdE and ZVEI. This year, the market is expected to further decline by 13%.
The Asian PCB market, worth $36.25 billion, accounts for nearly 75% of the global PCB industry. Southeast Asia, including China, accounts for $27.25 billion, and Japan, $9 billion. However, the Southeast Asian PCB market including China suffered a 5.4% drop in its 2008 revenues, while the Japanese market declined by 5.3%.
In Europe, the PCB market is somewhat more stable, and is larger than the U.S. market. For 2008, Europe's PCB industry only suffered a 0.8% decline, while the North American market dropped 5.6%. In addition to this, Europe's PCB market share worldwide increased by 0.5 percentage point to 12.6% in 2008, compared to 12.1% in 2007.
